Ronald McDonald House Orange County
A Home for Families In Need
In the early 1980s, Ron Van Winkle kept vigil for his young son Patrick as he underwent cancer treatment. Like many parents, Ron tried to rest in hospital waiting rooms, benches, and even his truck, only to be reminded that hospitals weren’t built with families in mind. Out of that experience, and with the vision of Dr. Geni Bennetts and a group of parents, the dream of a Ronald McDonald House in Orange County was born.
Building with Compassion
The first Ronald McDonald House Orange County opened in 1989 across from CHOC with 20 bedrooms—designed intentionally to feel warm, gentle, and welcoming. Rounded corners, quiet rooms, and soothing colors all served one purpose: to give families space to rest, reflect, and regain strength while their child received medical care.
Over the years, the House has grown to meet the evolving needs of families. Today, families facing cancer treatment and neonatal care make up the majority of those served. In 2019, a major expansion doubled the House from 20 rooms to 44, ensuring that even more families could find shelter, support, and hope during their hardest days.
Why It Matters to Community of Christ Anaheim
At Community of Christ Anaheim, we see the story of Ronald McDonald House as an extension of Christ’s mission in our city. Its work reflects our Enduring Principles—affirming the Worth of All Persons, providing spaces that foster Peace and Wholeness, and demonstrating the Generosity of Spirit that brings healing to families.
It also aligns with our Mission Initiatives: to Abolish Poverty, End Suffering by meeting families’ basic needs, and to Develop Disciples to Serve as we stand with those who are hurting. Supporting Ronald McDonald House is one way we live out our call to bring compassion and hope into Anaheim.
